Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site (inscribed in 2003, extended in 2015) thanks to its ancient karst mountains and hundreds of caves. The Phong Nha tourist area is about 45 km from Dong Hoi city. Since the 2025 provincial reorganisation the area belongs to the new Quang Tri province, but travellers still know it as Quang Binh.

When to visit Phong Nha

  • Roughly March – August: the dry season and the best time. May – August is hot but perfect for streams, Dark Cave and kayaking.
  • September – December: central Vietnam’s rainy and flood season; boat trips into Phong Nha Cave and water activities may pause when the Son River rises.
  • January – February: cool with drizzle; dry caves such as Paradise Cave remain open.

How to get to Phong Nha

  • By air: fly to Dong Hoi airport, then about 1 hour by car to Phong Nha.
  • Train or bus: Dong Hoi station is on the North–South railway; many sleeper buses stop in Phong Nha.
  • From Hue: about 200 km (3.5 – 4 hours). Try the Chay River & Dark Cave day tour from Hue. From Da Nang it is further, so stay at least one night.

Things to do in Phong Nha

  • Phong Nha Cave: a boat ride on the Son River straight into the cave along an underground river lined with stalactites.
  • Paradise Cave: a dry cave about 31 km long; visitors follow roughly 1 km of wooden walkways past spectacular formations. Fit travellers can join the 7 km deep exploration.
  • Dark Cave: zipline, swim into the cave, mud bath and kayak on the Chay River.
  • Mooc Spring, OZO Park, HAVA: natural swimming spots and outdoor games in the jungle.
  • Expeditions: cave and jungle trekking routes – and Son Doong, the largest cave in the world (only with a licensed expedition, very limited places).

What to eat

  • Chao canh – Quang Binh’s favourite thick noodle soup for breakfast.
  • Banh bot loc – chewy tapioca dumplings with shrimp and pork.
  • Free-range chicken, local pork and river fish at restaurants around Phong Nha.
  • Souvenirs: khoai deo (dried sweet potato), sesame candy, fish sauce.

Tip: wear trainers with good grip (Paradise Cave has many steps) and bring swimwear plus dry clothes for Dark Cave and Mooc Spring. Summer is peak season – book tours and rooms early.

Suggested 2-day, 1-night itinerary

  • Day 1: Paradise Cave in the morning, boat trip into Phong Nha Cave in the afternoon, overnight in Phong Nha.
  • Day 2: Dark Cave (zipline, mud bath) or Mooc Spring; afternoon back to Dong Hoi for Nhat Le beach.
