Ha Giang is Vietnam’s far-northern mountain region. The Dong Van Karst Plateau is a UNESCO Global Geopark (recognised in 2010), with some of the most spectacular mountain roads in Vietnam. Since the 2025 provincial reorganisation Ha Giang has become part of the new Tuyen Quang province, but “Ha Giang” is still the name everyone uses for this destination.

When is the best time to visit Ha Giang?

  • January – March: peach and plum blossoms in the villages; cold, sometimes frosty.
  • April – June: water-filled rice terraces in Hoang Su Phi.
  • September – October: golden ripe rice on the terraces.
  • October – December: buckwheat flower season – the busiest time.

July – August is rainy and landslides can affect the passes, so check the weather before you go.

How to get to Ha Giang

  • From Hanoi: about 300 km, 6 – 7 hours by sleeper bus (usually overnight).
  • Doing the loop: rent a motorbike (licence and solid mountain-riding skills required), hire an Easy Rider (motorbike with driver), or join a multi-day tour by car.
  • From central Vietnam: fly to Hanoi first, then continue to Ha Giang.

The classic Ha Giang loop

  • Quan Ba: Heaven’s Gate and the Co Tien twin mountains.
  • Yen Minh – Lung Cam: pine forests and Lung Cam cultural village (setting of the film “Pao’s Story”).
  • Vuong family palace (the “H’mong King’s palace”) in Sa Phin.
  • Lung Cu flag tower – near Vietnam’s northernmost point.
  • Dong Van old quarter and highland markets.
  • Ma Pi Leng Pass & Nho Que River: boat trip through Tu San canyon.
  • Meo Vac and the Khau Vai love market (around the 27th day of the 3rd lunar month).

Endless mountain ranges along the Ha Giang loop.

What to eat

  • Thang co – the traditional H’mong stew.
  • Chao au tau – a warming rice porridge; the au tau root is toxic if prepared wrongly, so only eat it at reputable places.
  • Egg banh cuon in Dong Van and men men (steamed corn flour).
  • Souvenirs: smoked buffalo meat, Shan Tuyet tea, mint honey.

Tip: bring warm clothes even in summer (nights on the plateau are chilly), motion-sickness pills, shoes with grip and cash. The passes are narrow and winding – if you are not used to mountain riding, go with a driver or a tour. Foreign visitors should note registration rules and fees in border areas.

Suggested 4-day Ha Giang itinerary

  • Day 1: Hanoi – Ha Giang (overnight bus or early morning).
  • Day 2: Quan Ba – Yen Minh – Lung Cam – Vuong palace – Dong Van.
  • Day 3: Lung Cu – Ma Pi Leng – Nho Que boat trip – Meo Vac.
  • Day 4: Meo Vac – Du Gia or back to Ha Giang city, bus to Hanoi.
