The Hai Van Pass crosses the Bach Ma range, the natural border between Da Nang and Hue, with its summit at around 500 m. The name "Hai Van" (sea clouds) comes from the clouds covering the top while the sea glitters below. Since the Hai Van tunnel opened in 2005, the pass has become a scenic route with few trucks – ideal for sightseeing.

Stops on the pass

  • Hai Van Gate: an old fortress gate at the summit, built under Emperor Minh Mang, with the inscription "the most majestic pass under heaven".
  • Old bunkers and lookouts at the top with panoramic views of Da Nang Bay.
  • Coastal bends overlooking Nam O fishing village and Lang Co.
  • Lap An lagoon – Lang Co at the foot of the pass on the Hue side.

Tips for the Hai Van Pass

  • Go in the morning when the sky is clear; avoid rain, thick fog and darkness.
  • By motorbike: check brakes, tyres and fuel; slow down on bends and don't overtake recklessly.
  • A car with driver or a tour is the safe choice for families.
  • Bring a light jacket: it's windy and cooler at the top.
